Artist’s Statement
This series is inspired by and dedicated to my husband, Lane Fritz, the cowboys he worked with at the Gang Ranch and all of ranchers committed to keeping the traditional west alive today.
This series first came about when I heard an art curator talking about another artist's painting of cowboys in the rain wearing yellow slickers. I do not remember her exact words, but they were along the lines of how the painting was of something in the past, because yellow slickers are not used anymore and cowboys no longer exist.
These words hit my gut and filled me with sadness that the world does not know that the west is still alive today and there are still working cowboys across North America. My husband has a yellow slicker and has spent countless days on horseback in the pouring rain, as I am sure many of you have as well.
Through my painting I am attempting to bring awareness to and to celebrate the traditional west that is alive today. I will begin this series by painting the cowboys I worked with at the Gang Ranch, and then continue on to the ranchers I've met across Western Canada who are keeping the traditional west alive today.
Important themes in my work are the harmonious relationship between horse and rider and the magic that can exist between man and animal. I also try to pay tribute to the craftmanship of western tack. I am constantly amazed by the artistry and talent that goes into carving a saddle, crafting a silver bit or braiding rawhide.
I also explore the relationship between light and shadow in this series. Most paintings have a limited pallet bringing a harmony and simplicity that I love for these cowboy paintings.
