Artist’s Statement
In this series the rider is not the focus of the paintings, but the relationship between horse and rider is strongly at play. I try to capture the relationship between horse and rider and the magical connection that exist between man and animal. I look for these moments of harmony evident by the calm of the animal’s eye and the way they carry their head. I love to see a horse holding a nice supple crest of the neck or a long and relaxed neck.
In this series I also try to pay tribute to the craftmanship of western tack. I am constantly amazed by the artistry and talent that goes into carving a saddle, crafting a silver bit or braiding rawhide.
This series features dramatic moody colors as I explore the relationship between light and shadow. Most paintings have a limited pallet bringing a harmony and simplicity that I love for these horse portraits.
